Started with six pair of pot stills. Malting was practiced until 1973. The peat was imported from Scotland. Doubled to twelve pair of pot stills in 1978. In 1981 a second distillery house - called Hakusu East - complex with six par of pot stills were built. The old were named West. Then it was the largest Distillery in the world. In 2006 Hakusu West was mothballed. A new grain whisky facility with one continuous still in December 2010. The long testing period ended May 2013. Uses 18 wash backs made of Douglas fir. Uses a full-Lauter mash tun. Some of the six pair of pot stills are direct heated and one wash uses a worm tub.
